Manic Depression

A large number of people across the globe suffer from depression on a yearly basis. Depression is a serious condition that comprises different emotions including feelings of frustration, loss, disappointment, and sadness to mention a few.

There are several different types of depression. But for the sake of this article, I’ll be talking about one major type – the maniac depression.

Also known as a bipolar disorder, maniac depression is the fifth among the disorders causing disability in the world and has been around for a long time. It is a condition that affects the behavior, thinking and moods of a person wherein the victim experiences drastic swings (episodes) between different moods and states of mind (i.e. alternates between two ‘poles’ of moodiness). This rapid attitudinal change also makes the energy level of the victim to fluctuate – he can be active and overexcited in one moment, but fall into depression at another time. This mood swing can last for a long time period and may even affect the victim’s ability to function properly.

Episodes of Maniac depression

The bipolar episode differs with an individual. But at times, victims can have mixed episodes. Generally, episodes of maniac depression can be caused by several factors known as triggers. One of these triggers includes living a stressful life particularly for someone with genetic vulnerability. Aside from alcoholic drinks and tranquilizers that trigger depression, abuse of substances like cocaine, heroin, and bhang is another trigger of a bipolar disorder. Although drugs do not cause maniac depression, the use of caffeine, antidepressants, corticosteroids and cold medicine can lead to episodes of bipolar disorder or worsen the situation.

Classes of bipolar disorder

  • Bipolar 1 disorder- They cause problems with relationships, at work and can be extremely dangerous.
  • Bipolar 2 disorder – They are less severe than bipolar 1. Even though the mood swings are there, the victim can still go about their normal daily routine.
  • Cyclothymia – It is a mild bipolar form. The victim can have hypomania and depression, but they are not as disruptive compared to other disorders. Ignoring it can result in further complications and eventually turn into a severe maniac depression.

Symptoms of maniac depression

Understanding the symptoms of maniac depression will do a great help in learning how to handle it. The major symptoms of bipolar disorder include mild or acute insomnia, random behavior, and hypersensitivity. Other less-occurring symptoms include rapid speech, increased physical activity, aggressive behavior, euphoria, poor judgment, seasonal emotional disorder, low concentration levels, lots of delusions and postpartum depression etc. Note: While bipolar disorder is not regarded as an illness, it is a condition that might take years to be diagnosed and a lifetime to be managed. If properly diagnosed, any type of depression can be treated successfully.

Is bipolar disorder hereditary?

Yes. Inherited traits play a large role with bipolar. Someone with a family member who has suffered from this disease is more likely to experience the same disorder. These feelings can afterward have an impact on the person, making them experience the episodes of maniac depression.

Dangers of Maniac depression

Bipolar disorder can result in poor performance in daily activities, like work, at school and can even affect relationships. It can also be life-threatening as it pushes the victim to commit suicide and in some cases homicide (since they can hardly control their actions).

Who is more at risk?

Although it mostly occurs in young adolescents, maniac depression affects people of all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, ethnic groups, sexes, and societies. Likewise, it has a weighty impact on the victim’s home environment and family.

Treatment of bipolar disorder Despite a lot of myths that surrounds this disorder, it is important to note that a person living with it can be treated. However, its treatment is totally different from other types of depression. Maniac depression requires intensive psychological rehabilitation, therapies, and medication. Some safe and natural health supplements can also help with depression and mood changes. With that said, the best way to defeat maniac depression is to combine treatment methods together. Talk to an expert to see whether changing your lifestyle or therapies could be the answer. Whichever treatment that is right for you, the first thing is to seek help. There’s help everywhere, so take the bold step today!
